Life sentences for Ethiopian opposition

An Ethiopian court has sentenced 35 opposition members to life in prison for their role in 2005 election protests that resulted in scores of deaths, rebuffing a prosecution request for the death penalty.

A three-judge panel read the verdicts to the court in the Ethiopian capital.

The remaining eight defendants given their punishments were sentenced to between 18 years and 18 months.

38 defendants were present, while the remaining were tried in absentia.
