Cabinet approval was given to the Minister for Transport today to move motions in the Dáil and Seanad seeking approval to participate in an agreement regarding the exchange of information of passengers travelling to the US.
The agreement was reached on the 26 June between the European Union and US, but today was the first time it came before cabinet.
The agreement means there is now a long-term settlement in place whereby US authorities can get information regarding passengers date of birth, seat number, address, phone number and credit card details.
A temporary agreement had been in place since October.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said the agreement would last for seven years.
The new agreement is due to come into force on the 10 July.
