The term 'superfood' is to be restricted on product packaging under new European Union laws.
Manufacturers will have to justify their health benefit claims if they want to use the description.
Almost 100 products are described as superfoods, the best known include salmon, spinach, soy and blueberries.
The new EU regulation will ban the use of the term unless it is accompanied by a specific authorised health claim that explains to consumers exactly why the product is good for their health.
The regulation comes into effect on Sunday but companies have two years in which to adjust their marketing in line with the new rules.
