A United Nations report on illegal drugs has found opium production in Afghanistan is soaring out of control.
The annual World Drug Report says that while the overall market for narcotics worldwide remained relatively stable last year, drug cultivation in Afghanistan pushed global production of opium to record levels.
In the 1980s, Afghanistan produced around 30% of the world's opium - now it is over 90%.
The UN report warns that Afghanistan is unlikely to regain any real security until the production of illegal drugs is tackled.
