The EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, has said talks with Iran's nuclear chief were constructive and he hoped for another round in three weeks.

The talks were aimed at easing an international crisis over Tehran's refusal to adhere to a UN Security Council demand to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.

Tehran's envoy, Ali Larijani, said his country wanted to settle its nuclear dispute with the West through diplomacy.
