The Mayo TD, Beverley Flynn, has said that she has made a full and final settlement with RTÉ regarding her outstanding legal costs following her failed libel action against the station.

Ms Flynn made the announcement at a celebration for her supporters in Castlebar last night.

Responding to Ms Flynn's comments on the settlement, RTÉ said the matter has to go back to court and therefore declined to comment further.

Ms Flynn owed RTÉ almost €3 million in legal costs following her unsuccessful libel action against the station in 2001.

It followed RTÉ reports that she had encouraged or assisted some customers to evade tax while working for National Irish Bank.

The station recently took bankruptcy proceedings against her, saying she had failed to pay any of the total bill.

Counsel for Ms Flynn argued that she had offered almost €600,000 to RTE, but that the offer had been rejected.

Last night, Deputy Flynn told 500 of her supporters at a post election celebration in Castlebar that her long running legal battle with RTÉ was now over; however she declined to reveal details of the settlement.

Deputy Flynn also said that her constitutional appeal challenging the disqualification of Dáil members if they are declared bankrupt would not now be proceeding.
