A consortium led by one of Ireland's leading broadcasters and businessman, Mike Murphy, has today made a submission to the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland for the new multi-city radio licence.
If the group is successful in its bid the new radio station, which will be known as Radio 3, will broadcast to over 45s in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Clare.
Mr Murphy, Vice-Chairman of Radio 3, has invested in the station and will also present a show on air.
Radio 3 was devised by Mr Murphy in conjunction with Wilton Radio, the consortium led by Dan Healy, Deborah Fagan and Kealan Lennon of Boundary Radio.
The group will invest €8 million to fund the station to profit.
The proposed new station promises a strong line up of established broadcasters both on air and behind the scenes.
The station will combine music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s with personality and chat.
The station will be supported by an editorial advisory round-table committee of Donal Lunny, Gerry Stembridge, John O'Conor, Barry Devlin and Mike Murphy.
This group will also commission specialist programming for the station.
