US-led forces in Afghanistan have killed seven Afghan policemen in a combined ground assault and air strike.

The incident happened after Afghan forces came under attack from Taliban forces and asked US troops for help.

It is understood that the US forces then called in an air strike after they were mistakenly fired upon by the Afghans.

A police spokesperson condemned what he described as a 'brutal attack', highlighting the fact that each of those killed suffered at least 20 bullet wounds.

The attack occurred late yesterday in the eastern province of Nangarhar, which borders Pakistan.

Violence has surged in Afghanistan in recent months, but a threatened Taliban offensive has not materialised.

Around 50,000 foreign troops are currently serving in Afghanistan alongside the Afghan army and police.
