The State Examinations Commission has agreed to reissue a transsexual's Leaving Certificate results, taking into account her new identity.
The woman had taken a case against the commission under the Equal Status Act.
The applicant at the centre of this case - who was registered at birth as a male - was diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder and after undergoing treatment, changed her name by deed poll.
She then requested new versions of her State examination certificates to take account of her new identity.
Initially, the State Exams Commission advised her it was not possible to re-issue the certificates.
After the woman brought a complaint of discrimination on gender grounds, the Commission reviewed its practice and has now indicated it will reissue the certificates.
Today's announcement has been welcomed by the Equality Authority - it described the move as very important in terms of establishing proper protection for the rights of transsexuals in Ireland.
The Authority's head, Niall Crowley, called for Government action to provide legal recognition for all transsexuals.
