US quarantines man with rare TB strain

The US has placed in quarantine a man who may have exposed fellow air passengers and crew to a rare and dangerous TB strain on two transatlantic flights this month.

It is the first time since 1963 that the US government has issued such an isolation order.

The man, a US citizen from the state of Georgia, is suffering from extensive drug-resistant TB, which has a high mortality rate.

The authorities in the US and other countries are trying to notify passengers who travelled on an Air France flight from Atlanta to Paris on 13 May, and on a Czech Air flight from Prague to Montreal on 24 May.

Despite the dangers, US specialist Dr William Schaffner said he did not think there was a high risk of these passengers being infected.
