Sighting 'significant' to McCann case - Father

watch

The father of the British child, Madeleine McCann, who has been missing for almost three weeks, has said the sighting of a man on the night she disappeared is 'significant' to the case.

In a public statement, Gerry McCann said the reported sighting of a man with what appeared to be a child in his arms was both significant and relevant to Madeleine's abduction.

He said he and his wife, Kate, welcomed the release of the information by the Portuguese police.

The couple have again appealed for information about the whereabouts of their four-year-old daughter.

Police in Portugal said a witness, a friend of the child's parents, reported seeing a man carrying what could have been a child in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz at 9.30pm on 3 May.

A source indicated last night that the sighting - the most striking so far in the case - was by one of the couple's party who has not been named.
