Fire investigators in London are treating as suspicious the cause of a blaze early this morning that badly damaged one of the city's best known attractions, the 19th century tea clipper, Cutty Sark.

However, local police said there is no firm evidence of arson.

The 138-year-old vessel had been undergoing refurbishment in dry dock in Greenwich. Having made its first voyage in 1870, the ship is one of Britain’s maritime treasures.

Under reconstruction, it was due to reopen to the public in 2009. Up to 50% of the ship was not at the site, as it had been taken away for renovation.

Parts of the area around Greenwich were evacuated due to the fire.
