One person has been killed and two others injured when a college student opened fire at a campus apartment complex in central California.
The shooting took place late yesterday near the campus of California State University in Fresno, 352km northeast of Los Angeles.
The gunman was identified by local media as a 19-year-old criminology student.
He was still inside the apartment early today with police negotiators attempting to end the stand-off.
A Fresno Police Department spokesman said the shootings took place around 11.30pm last night (7.30am today, Irish time).
California State University Campus Police said in a statement that the campus was open and classes would be conducted on schedule.
Some local reports said the dead person was a former student. The two injured victims, aged 19 and 22, were released from hospital after treatment for gunshot wounds.
One report said the incident occurred after an argument over a PlayStation 2 video game console.
