The Portuguese government has defended the police investigation into the suspected abduction of three-year-old Madeleine McCann.

The Portuguese Ambassador in London has said the case was of 'great concern' to Portugal and asked people to trust the police.

Investigating police have said they cannot be certain that the missing toddler from Leicester in England is still alive.

It is feared the English girl may have been abducted from a holiday apartment in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz in Portugal on Thursday night.

Police have widened their search to 15km from Praia da Luz and are working closely with Interpol and Europol.

The girl's mother, Kate McCann, appealed to whoever is holding her daughter not to hurt her.

Yesterday, police were investigating a claim that a balding man was seen dragging a small child towards a marina a short drive from the resort where she and her family were staying.
