A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of a security manager last year.
Darren Larkin, a gangland criminal, ran into the Blanchardstown Leisureplex with a shotgun and shot 49-year-old Afek Alquasar once in the head.
He then tried to shoot him again but missed as Afek Alquasar fired bowling shoes at him.
Mr Alquasar testified against Larkin but as a result of threats he and his family had to enter the Witness Protection Programme.
The Alquasar family were the first law abiding citizens to enter the programme.
Today Mr Alquasar told the court his marriage was effectively over and he would never live in Ireland again.
Mr Justice Eamon De Valera said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to other gunmen.
Larkin, he said, would have got life if his murder attempt had been successful and it would be an absurdity not to hand down the maximum penalty in this case.
