Boy in serious condition after sea rescue

A 15-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital after being rescued from the sea.

A major air and sea search was mounted after the teenager was swept out to sea off Northern Ireland's north coast in mid-afternoon.

He was in a dingy with a friend when it capsized close to Castlerock, Co Derry.

Lifeboat, coastguard and helicopter crews were summoned after the friend swam ashore and raised the alarm.

The empty inflatable was discovered by a lifeboat 500 metres from shore.

A coastguard spokesman said the boat had been carried to open seas by strong winds.

An Irish helicopter spotted the boy and rescued him from the sea.

He was then taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine for treatment.

The rescued boy had been in the water for some time and was described as 'very cold' and 'very poorly'.
