A 51-year-old man remains in a critical condition as an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his unconscious state in a garda cell in Cork continues.
The man, who is Russian, was arrested in the Victoria Cross Road area of the city following a report of criminal damage early yesterday.
Gardaí said he was placed alone in a cell at Togher Garda Station at around 7.05am and just over an hour later they discovered him in an unconscious condition and with serious head injuries.
A Garda Superintendent from outside the division has been appointed to investigate the incident.
