A car bomb has killed over 50 people and injured 70 in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala.

The blast happened 500 metres from the Imam Abbas shrine in Karbala, 100 kilometres southwest of Baghdad.

It's the second such attack on the Shi'ite city in two weeks.

Elsewhere, a total of 27 bodies were found in different parts of the religiously mixed Iraqi city of Baquba.

Police said 15 bodies, handcuffed and with gunshot wounds to the head, were discovered in a field.

Another 12 were found in other parts of the city.
