The Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, has opened the 13th EBU Radio Assembly, which is being hosted this year by RTÉ and held at Dublin Castle.
A total of 120 delegates from public service radio broadcasters across Europe will attend over the next two days.
Among the issues to be discussed are the development of new radio technologies, including digital radio, podcasting, music for mobiles and news interactivity.
Minister Dempsey said radio is part of the fabric of Europe's culture and its democracy, and what is discussed at the meeting will have a long term influence on Europe's radio services.
