Bail refused in firebomb case

Three men charged with firebombing a house from which a mother and her six-month-old baby narrowly escaped have had their application for bail refused.

All three were denied bail after evidence from their pending trial was heard in camera at Athlone District Court this evening.

Raymond O'Neill and William O'Neill, both of Meadowbrook, Willow Park, Athlone, Co Westmeath, and PJ O'Neill of Battery Heights, Athlone, were all remanded to Cloverhill Prison on charges of arson.

The three were arrested following a petrol bomb attack on a house at Woodlands Grove, Athlone, shortly after 6am last Thursday from which a woman and an infant had to be rescued by gardaí.

A fourth man charged with threatening to kill another man in an earlier, connected incident, consented to custody.

Patrick Kelly, with an address at Woodlands, Athlone, was also remanded to Cloverhill Prison.

He is charged with criminal damage to a property and threatening to kill another man at a house in Athlone town shortly after midnight on Thursday morning.

Mr Kelly was arrested after gardaí received a call to a house in Battery Heights where a window had been smashed and a man had allegedly threatened to kill the occupant.

Judge David Anderson heard a Section Two application in relation to a bail application by Raymond O'Neill, William O'Neill and PJ O'Neill and refused bail to all three.

All four men are to appear again at Athlone District Court on 1 May.
