A garda search is under way after a prisoner under escort escaped from University College Hospital, Galway.

Michael Murray, an inmate at Castlerea Prison, was an inpatient at the hospital when he absconded through a window just after 1am this morning.

The 36-year-old, who is from Douglas in Co Cork, is serving a seven-year sentence (two suspended) for robbery and possession of stolen goods, and possession of an offensive weapon.

He is due for release on 4 June.
