Galway County Councillor, Michael Fahy who was due to begin a 12 month jail sentence tomorrow has been taken to hospital in Galway.

He was brought by ambulance from his home in Ardrahan and admitted to the Accident and Emergency unit at University College Hospital Galway shortly after 7pm.

The hospital declined to give any information on why he was admitted but said his condition was 'being monitored'.

A family friend told RTÉ News he had earlier complained of being unwell and was seen by a doctor.

The 56-year-old farmer and long serving local politician was sentenced at the Circuit Court in Galway to one year in jail and fined E75,000 for the misappropriation of council funds.

An application for bail was refused in the Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin last Friday and he was due to present himself at Loughrea Garda Station at 11am tomorrow to begin his prison sentence.
