Organist admits stealing from NI church

An organist has pleaded guilty at Antrim Crown Court to stealing nearly £150,000 - equivalent to more than €220,000 - from her church and the bank where she worked.

Muriel Stewart, who is a member of the Women's Association at Dunloy Presbyterian Church in Co Antrim, admitted stealing more than £96,000 belonging to its treasurer.

The 55-year-old also pleaded guilty to stealing almost £30,000 from clients of the First Trust Bank in Ballymoney where she was employed as a senior official and to taking almost £20,000 from a member of her congregation.

Sentencing was adjourned pending the completion of a consultant psychiatrist's report.

The Judge, Piers Grant, warned her she could face a prison sentence.
