A 19-year-old man was due before a special sitting of Longford District Court, charged in connection with an assault on a 47-year-old man in the town last night.

At around 8.45pm a row broke out at the entrance to a local housing estate on the Dublin Road in the town.

The injured man, who is believed to be around 47 years of age, received serious injuries to his head and body.

He was rushed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar and his condition today is described as stable.

Initially he was listed as critical when taken to the hospital.

Meanwhile, in Co Tipperary, a 17-year-old youth is being questioned by gardaí in Templemore investigating a stabbing in the town last night.

The youth presented himself at Templemore garda station earlier today. He is being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
