A 21-year-old woman has gone on trial charged with the murder of another young woman in Co Meath last year.

Kelly Noble from Seaview in Laytown has pleaded not guilty to the murder of 19-year-old Emma McLoughlin in Ninch in Laytown on 2 June last year.

She has also pleaded not guilty to a second charge of producing a knife during the course of a dispute in a manner likely to intimidate another person.

The jury heard that a dispute took place between Ms Noble and Ms McLoughlin in Pat's Supermarket in Laytown at around 9pm on the night of the murder.

They were told that the dispute was started by Ms McLoughlin who was upset about a previous incident that had taken place between them.

The owners of the shop tried to calm the two young women down but the dispute continued outside the shop and Ms McLoughlin was stabbed in the chest.

Prosecuting counsel, Anthony Sammon SC, said no one had directly seen Ms Noble stab Ms McLoughlin but he said there would be enough evidence for the jury to be satisfied that she did do it.
