Former White House aide Lewis 'Scooter' Libby has been found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with the US scandal known as 'Plamegate'.

During the run-up to the Iraq war, a handful of reporters were fed the name of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame by senior members of the Bush administration.

While Mr Libby was not accused of leaking her name, he was convicted for impeding the work of the special prosecutor assigned to the case.

It is believed that Valerie Plame became a target because of her husband, ex-diplomat Joseph Wilson. He became a sharp critic of the way in which President George W Bush and his officials manipulated intelligence while arguing for the Iraq war.

Plamegate shares a number of similarities to Watergate, but the end results are very different. Whereas President Richard Nixon had to ultimately resign, President Bush and Libby's boss Vice President Dick Cheney are still in power and US troops are still fighting in Iraq.

Libby faces 30 years in prison including 10 years on the obstruction of justice count and fines of up to $1.2 million.

US Vice President Dick Cheney has expressed deep disappointment over the conviction.

In a statement the Mr Cheney said Mr Libby had served the nation tirelessly and with great distinction through many years of public service.
