Wexford gardaí are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions following what they say was potentially a very serious incident in the town yesterday.
A man was arrested following a row in which a woman was stabbed and shots were subsequently fired across an estate.
Nobody was injured in the shooting incidents and the woman who was stabbed is recovering following a minor operation to wounds to her back.
The incident began around 12.30am yesterday morning in Wolf Tone Villas in Wexford town.
The woman received at least one stab wound in an apparent domestic dispute in a house in the small cul-de-sac.
After being taken to Wexford General Hospital, gardaí went to the house to question a man about the stabbing but before they got there, they received reports that shots had been fired in Wolf Tone Villas.
Uniformed gardaí proceeded to evacuate residents from neighbouring houses through their back doors and cordoned off the area.
Gardaí spoke to the man from behind a 4x4 vehicle parked in the driveway and say they noticed what appeared to be a firearm being held in his right hand down at his side.
Gardaí managed to disarm the man and arrest him and subsequently found the gun to be a fully loaded legally held point-22 rifle.
The man was detained overnight at Wexford Garda Station but released without charge.
A file is being prepared for the DPP and the gun has been confiscated.
