Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered an investigation into the killing of ten civilians by US troops in response to an ambush in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

US troops fired into a crowd of civilians yesterday after its five-vehicle convoy was hit by a suicide bomb and came under small arms fire.

It is claimed that US troops fired indiscriminately at civilians as they retreated from the scene.

The Afghan Interior Ministry confirmed that ten people were killed and a further 35 wounded in the attack.

Hundreds of people later gathered at the site, about 50km from the city of Jalalabad, to protest at the killings.

Roads around the area were blocked for several hours.

Associated Press is to complain to the US military after journalists said US troops deleted footage of the aftermath of yesterday's attack.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, nine Afghan civilians were killed overnight following a NATO air strike north of the capital Kabul.

It is understood five women and two children were among the dead when NATO forces responded to an overnight attack on its base in Kapisa province.

An Afghan intelligence official said there were reports that a militant had fired a rocket at the NATO base from his home in the area.
