Derry O'Rourke - Could be released this week

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has said it is concerned that victims of Derry O'Rourke have not been notified that he is expected to be released from prison this week.

The former swimming coach has served nine years for the rape and indecent assault of several young female swimmers in the 1970s and 1980s.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio’s News at One, one victim said he had ruined her life, and she was upset that the authorities had not contacted her to warn her of his imminent release.

O'Rourke was sentenced to a total of 29 years in jail, with the sentences to run concurrently. He is now eligible for release with remission.

O'Rourke is expected to be released from Midlands Prison in Co Laois on Thursday.

RTÉ understands that O'Rourke will be subject to the Sex Offenders Register and will have to make gardaí aware of his movements on his release.
