Cynthia Owen - Shatter calls for case review

The Minister for Justice has said he was 'profoundly disturbed' by the baby Noleen Murphy inquest and said he intended to take the matter further.

Michael McDowell said he intends to put the spotlight on all of the issues relating to the case to see if an inquiry is needed.

Solicitor and former TD Alan Shatter has called for a full review of the garda investigation in 1973 and material sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the 1990s relating to the case.

On RTÉ Radio's This Week, Mr Shatter spoke of the possibility of prosecutions, if not for the baby's death but for the litany of alleged sexual abuses arising out of the coroner's court.
