A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison for the manslaughter of a man in Clones, Co Monaghan, two years ago.

Laimonas Mackevicius had denied the charge of murder but pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mindagus Janavicius in July 2005.

Mr Janavicius was killed following an argument at a birthday party that later spread to a house in Clones.

The Central Criminal Court heard that the row at the birthday party had seen the door of a car and wooden fencing used as weapons, forcing guests at the party to take cover in neighbouring fields.

Following that earlier row, Mackevicius went to a house in Clones where some of the partygoers had gone. There he stabbed Mr Janavicius once in the chest, killing him.

Mackevicius then left the house and was brought by others to Northern Ireland before being bought back south of the border. He was then driven to Belfast to get a flight and ultimately fled to Spain.

He was eventually tracked down by gardaí and agreed to return to Ireland voluntarily last September.

Mackevicius has previous convictions in his native Lithuania and it is understood he will also have to serve a two year prison sentence there for a separate offence.
