Garda Headquarters has issued a statement confirming gardaí were informed by the Austrian authorities about the suspected use of two computers in Ireland as part of an international child pornographic network.

Gardaí say they were informed through Interpol last August.

Garda sources said this evening that because of the sensitive nature of the investigation it took some time to confirm that there had been contact between Interpol and An Garda Siochána.

Gardaí say the reported use of the computers in Ireland is now being investigated.

Earlier, Austrian police said they informed Interpol in Dublin of the matter on 22 August last year.

Gerald Hasztera of Austria's Federal Bureau of Criminal Investigation said his colleagues also spoke to his counterpart in Dublin in connection with the matter.

The statement came hours after gardaí said they had no record of having being contacted by the Austrian authorities in relation to the investigation.

At that stage, Garda Headquarters said it had not been contacted on the matter by either Europol or Interpol.

Austrian officials have uncovered a major pornography ring, in which 2,361 people in 77 states paid to view images that showed 'the worst kind of child sexual abuse'.

The videos were posted on a Russian website, hosted by an Austrian company.

Officials said 607 of the suspects were in the United States, 466 in Germany, 114 in France and 23 in Austria.
