Man in ¤2.9m settlement over brain injury

A 23-year-old man who suffered severe brain injury at birth has received ¤2.9 million in a settlement approved by the High Court.

Jordan Byrne, who now lives in Loughlinstown Co Dublin, had sued St Munchin's Regional Maternity Hospital in Limerick.

His mother, Clare Byrne claimed the hospital failed to properly monitor her blood pressure during her pregnancy leading to her suffering a number of eclamptic fits on 7 January 1984.

Mr Byrne was born by Caesarean section seven weeks premature on that day.

The Byrne family also claims that he was over ventilated at birth and these incidents caused him a severe brain injury.

The court was told he is a bright, alert young man but that the injury had left him permanently mentally and physically handicapped and he will remain dependant and in need of constant care and medical attention.

The hospital denied any negligence but Mr Justice John Quirke approved the ¤2.9m settlement between the parties. No liability was admitted.
