The Government is considering a 300-acre site at Lynch Army Camp at Kilworth in north Cork as the location for a new prison to cater for up to 500 prisoners from Munster.
Up to now, the Government had been planning to develop a new prison on Spike Island in Cork Harbour to replace the existing facility.
The over-crowded and antiquated jail in Cork city is expected to be incorporated into the new facility.
