A prominent Turkish-Armenian editor, convicted of insulting Turkish identity, has been shot dead outside his newspaper office in Istanbul.

Hrant Dink, a writer and journalist and a frequent target of nationalist anger, was shot by an unknown assailant as he left his newspaper, Agos, at around 1pm Irish time.

Turkey's NTV television said Mr Dink had been shot three times in the neck and police were now looking for an 18 or 19-year-old man.

Mr Dink had been given a six-month suspended sentence after writing about the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 during World War I.

He had been subject to many threats from nationalists as a result.

Turkey's Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said the killing was an attack on the country's stability.

CNN Turk television said two men had been detained in connection with the shooting.
