The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, has said that the Government has made the decision on the location of the new National Children's Hospital and it is now time to implement it.

She said she did not agree with the proposal of a two-site strategy because all medical experts should be based in the one location.

Ms Harney said that no matter what site was eventually chosen there would be problems due to institutional rivalry.

Earlier, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny called for an independent review of how the proposed Mater site for the new hospital was selected.

Mr Kenny said he had a 'deep suspicion' that something was wrong with the selection procedure, following the withdrawal of Tallaght and Crumlin hospitals from the process.

He said he was also concerned that the sites considered were not properly rated, and there had not been enough clarity and transparency about the process used.
