Israeli forces are carrying out limited incursions a few kilometres inside southern Lebanon, an army spokesman said today.

'At most, we're talking about a few kilometres in,' the spokesman said.

'It will probably widen, but we are still looking at limited operations. We're not talking about massive forces going inside at this point.'

Israeli soldiers are occupying one Lebanese village but have withdrawn from another.

Israel has massed soldiers and tanks on the border with Lebanon and called up thousands of reserve troops, ahead of a possible ground offensive.

Planes dropped leaflets on southern Lebanon warning any civilians to leave.

Israeli Defence Forces spokesman, Marcus Sheff, said there were no plans for a ground invasion.

Senior Lebanese officials have warned that its army will go into battle if Israel invades Lebanon.

Israel has been carrying out fresh attacks on southern Lebanon, including shelling of the port city of Tyre.

The militant group, Hezbollah, responded by firing a number of rockets at towns across northern Israel, injuring ten people.

Israel said the attacks were aimed at destroying weapons belonging to Hezbollah militants.
