A Dublin heroin addict who escaped from garda custody has been released from prison to wait for an in-patient drug detoxification course.

Rachel Keogh, 26, who said she feared being in Mountjoy Prison where drugs are constantly present, was released on condition that she reside with her mother, obey a night time curfew and attend a methadone and counselling stabilisation programme.

Ms Keogh was previously refused bail at Dublin District Court.

The judge was told that Ms Keogh would have to wait up to three months for a place on the Cuan Dara in-patient detoxification programme at Cherry Orchard Hospital in Dublin.

Speaking after her release, Ms Keogh said he wanted to thank everyone who had helped her while her mother Lynda pointed out that her daughter still has to wait for treatment.

Ms Keogh escaped from Pearse Street Garda Station on 1 July after being seen by a doctor following her arrest on shoplifting charges.

Judge Dunne today wished Ms Keogh well over the next three months, saying it was a very important period in her life and a great opportunity to return to normality.

The judge said she was lucky to have the day-to-day support of a caring mother.

The defendant is due to appear in Dublin District Court on 9 October but the prosecution can apply to the court if any bail conditions are breached.
