The State Examinations Commission has said it is satisfied that three Junior Certificate students at Tullamore College have been given an opportunity to sit their exams.

Three boys were not allowed to sit their exams at the college today because of short haircuts that the principal, Edward McEvoy, said broke school rules.

The SEC described the issue as a 'local one' and says it is satisfied that the boys have been given an opportunity to sit their exams, which the SEC says is its main focus.

Ard Scoil Chiaran in Clara, which is 12km from Tullamore College, was selected as an alternative examination centre for the boys to sit their tests.

However, one of the three, 15-year-old Enda Carroll, is not sitting any exams today because he is insistent that he should be allowed to do so at Tullamore College. He will now have to re-sit his exams next summer, according to his mother, Pam.

The Union of Secondary Students has described the policy at Tullamore College as 'irrational'.

The blade one haircuts, which led to the row, are a common sight nationwide. The USS said that the strict policy at the school is putting unnecessary pressure on students at an already very stressful time.
