The Supreme Court ruling that found legislation governing the unlawful carnal knowledge of children under the age of 15 was unconstitutional is impacting on a number of court cases.

A 38-year-old man, convicted two years ago of the unlawful carnal knowledge of a 12-year-old girl, is to challenge his continued detention in prison in court on Monday.

There is also concern about the case of a 64-year-old Antrim man who is serving four life sentences for the unlawful carnal knowledge of three girls - aged six, eight and ten.

His lawyers could now decide to challenge his continued imprisonment or attempt to have his conviction in 2003 quashed.

Earlier, the State decided not to go ahead with the prosecution of a 34-year-old man charged with the unlawful carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old girl.

While the section of law dealing with girls between 15 and 17 years old has not been found unconstitutional, the State's decision shows that they believe similar issues could apply.

Another case is due before the courts next Thursday. A 33-year-old Galway man is due to be sentenced for the unlawful carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old.
