Ryanair flight FR25 from Paris to Dublin was due in Dublin at about 11pm tonight after having been diverted earlier to Prestwick.

It was expected to leave Scotland at about 10pm when nothing was found following a bomb alert.

The flight, from Paris Beauvais to Dublin, was diverted to Prestwick Airport in Scotland this afternoon following a security alert.

It is understood a note was given to flight staff saying there was a bomb on board.

The airport, which is around 30km from Glasgow, was closed, but Strathclyde Police said later it had reopened and all passengers had been taken off the plane.

A Tornado F3 from RAF Leuchars was diverted from a routine training flight in order to assist the plane as it landed safely at 2.22pm.

Two additional Tornados were also scrambled from RAF Coningsby.

With Prestwick closed, inbound flights were diverted to other airports and no outgoing flights were taking off.

Incoming flights were diverted to Edinburgh Airport, and passengers on outgoing flights were led back into the terminal building.

Three coach loads of passengers from the Dublin-bound flight were led into a terminal building with a large police escort.

The majority of the travellers appeared to be young teenagers or in their 20s.

Planes started taxiing on the runway of the reopened airport just after 5pm and a flight took off at 5.20pm.

Long queues of outbound passengers had built up inside the terminal building.

71 students from St Leo's College in Carlow who were on board the flight following on a school trip to Paris are all reported safe and well.
