At least 57 dead after blast in Pakistan

A bomb targeting Sunni Muslims has killed at least 57 people and wounded dozens in the Pakistani city of Karachi.

The suspected suicide blast is believed to have been centred close to a stage where prayer leaders had gathered to celebrate the anniversary of Prophet Mohammed's birth.

Police have confirmed that several leaders of the Sunni organisation, Jamaat-e-Ahle Sunnat, were killed in the explosion.

Among the scores of people wounded were journalists and photographers covering the prayer meeting.

Angry mobs rampaged through Karachi's streets after the blast, burning cars, buses and a fire engine. Police fired tear gas and live rounds in the air in attempts to disperse them.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but sectarian violence between Pakistan's Sunni Muslim majority and minority Shias has plagued the country for the past two decades.
