A man has been killed in Nepal as troops opened fire on activists protesting against King Gyanendra's rule. The pro-democracy rally was taking place in the resort town of Pokhara.
Tight security elsewhere prevented big demonstrations from taking place throughout the troubled nation.
Pokhara was hit by massive protests through the day yesterday with activists fighting pitched battles with troops who fired dozens of tear gas shells to quell them, according to witness reports.
The violence came on the 16th anniversary of democracy in the Himalayan kingdom. Nepal’s mainstream political parties began a four-day nationwide general strike and protests on Thursday.
The parties had planned a massive show of strength with a rally in the heart of Kathmandu today, however, stringent security has hindered further protests.
