Eight people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, some 50km west of Baghdad.

The bomb, carried in a lorry, went off at a checkpoint manned by US soldiers and Iraqi security forces. Seven Iraqis and a US marine were killed; two Iraqi policemen and another civilian were injured.

In another incident, two policemen were killed and three wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in the town of Tikrit, 175 km north of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Iraq's justice minister has said that Iraqi authorities have no intention of continuing to use Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison.

The comments by Abd al-Hussein Shandel come after yesterday's announcement by the US military that it planned to shut down the prison in the next two to three months after transferring remaining detainees elsewhere.
