Twelve killed in Indian bomb blasts
Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:59A third bomb has exploded in a train in the Indian holy city of Varanasi, as the death toll from two earlier bombs rose to 12.
Varanasi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, is the holiest Hindu city, lying on the banks of river Ganges.
Ten people, mainly devotees, were killed at the revered Hanuman Temple shrine when the first blast occurred.
Two passengers were killed in the second bombing in the Varanasi rail station ten minutes later.
The third explosion occurred inside a crowded coach of the Shiv Ganga Express minutes before it was to set off for New Delhi.
38 passengers were injured in the explosion inside the economy class carriage, which was packed with people going on vacation ahead of the annual Hindu festival of color, Holi, on 15 March.
Twenty-two people were injured in the temple blast.
