A young Dublin woman who was sacked by Dunnes Stores for wearing a union membership badge has been offered her job back.

The campaign to re-instate Joanne Delaney, who was a mandate shop steward, has received worldwide attention since late last year, with protests outside stores in Ireland and Britain.

Her case was raised in the Dáil and by British MPs in the Scottish Parliament and the House of Commons.

Tonight the Mandate Trade Union said the offer of re-instatement was a huge victory for the trade union movement and a tribute to the long running campaign by supporters within Ms Delaney's own community.

Joanne Delaney was suspended and later sacked from her job for refusing to remove a union membership badge.

She was pursuing an unfair dismissals claim against Dunnes Stores but it is understood she intends to return to her job.

Dunnes Stores has never publicly commented on the case.

It is understood Ms Delaney received a letter by courier in the past hour offering her a return to work on Monday.

She has until tomorrow evening to accept the offer.
