13 sailors killed in Sri Lanka attack

13 Sri Lankan sailors have been killed in a landmine attack by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels.

The attack on a naval convoy happened in Mannar district in northern Sri Lanka. The military said it was the worst breach so far of a ceasefire which was called in 2002.

Spokesmen for the military said that a claymore fragmentation mine exploded near a naval bus carrying up to 30 sailors; another mine exploded beside a truck in the same convoy.

A two-decade war between the Sri Lankan armed forces and the Tamil Tigers has claimed 64,000 lives.

The Tigers have threatened to return to war in 2006 if they do not get concessions from the government.
