Jewish settler killed in West Bank shooting

Palestinian gunmen killed a Jewish settler and wounded two other people when they opened fire on an Israeli car in the occupied West Bank today.

The car was ambushed by a passing vehicle on a road near the city of Hebron.

Settlers said the 30-year-old driver was shot in the head. He died in hospital. Two passengers were slightly wounded.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades and Islamic Jihad claimed joint responsibility for the shooting. Three settlers were killed in the same area on 16 October.

Palestinian militants have vowed to avenge Israel's killing of four gunmen in an airstrike on the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

That Israeli action followed a suicide bomb attack on shopping mall in the town of Netanaya in central Israel on 5 December which killed five people.
