Almost 50 people died in a major bombing and many smaller attacks in Iraq today.

At least 30 people were killed when a suicide car bomb exploded at a market in Tal Afar.

Another 45 people were injured in the attack, which targeted one of the town's largest markets. Last month, Tal Afar was the scene of a major US and Iraqi offensive against insurgents.

In Baghdad, five soldiers and two civilians died in a suicide car bomb attack in the western Amiriya district of the city. Police said insurgents had targeted Iraqi soldiers in the attack.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, two policewomen were shot and killed as they rode in a taxi.

Four policemen were shot dead in the northern city of Kirkuk, while two civilians and a policeman were shot in Baquba, north of Baghdad.

The attacks come four days before the referendum on the country's draft constitution.
