British soldiers in southern Iraq have detained 12 people suspected of being linked to recent attacks in the region.

A British Army spokesman said they were held during a raid in Basra, which was part of an ongoing investigation into recent attacks on British forces.

Separately in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, three Iraqis were killed when gunmen opened fire on a taxi.

The Iraqi interior ministry said the cab had just picked up four firemen on their way home from work in the Amiriyah district before the shooting.

Officials said two of the firemen and the taxi driver were killed in the incident, while the two other firemen were injured.

Meanwhile, Iraqi authorities were handing out millions of copies of the draft constitution ahead of next week's referendum.

Up to five million copies of the text are due to be printed with the help of the United Nations assistance mission ahead of the 15 October referendum.
